BARACUTA x BARBOUR

Published

The emblematic brand Barbour collaborates for the first time with the iconic brand Baracuta, for an Autumn-Winter 2023 capsule collection.

This collaboration, which brings together two very British brands, celebrates the original, the one and only Harrington jacket by Baracuta, known worldwide as the G9.

Born in Manchester in 1938, just one year after the brand was created, 2023 marks the 85th anniversary of this legendary jacket.

The collaboration reimagines, among other things, Baracuta's iconic style with signature Barbour details to create a contemporary interpretation, thus merging heritage and modernity. With perfect synergy, this collaboration celebrates the epitome of Baracuta's British heritage mixed with Barbour's deeply rooted DNA.

The collection is inspired by the "Ivy League" preppy style that gained momentum in the early 20th century. Launched by elite American East Coast students who wanted clothes that allowed them to go from classes to sports fields, this style sparked keen interest among the British in the 1960s, who reinterpreted it and made it their own. The British Ivy League look was then chicer and included new elements such as workwear, silk scarves, and flat caps. Paying tribute to this era, the Barbour x Baracuta collection features three styles of outdoor jackets in different colors that combine the iconic tartans of both brands: Barbour's classic tartan and Baracuta's Fraser Fodera tartan lining.

Barbour x Baracuta Porton Wax

The Barbour x Baracuta Porton Wax jacket is Barbour's take on Baracuta's traditional G9 jacket. Featuring elastic ribbed cuffs and a two-button collar, this waxed cotton style is available in olive or navy.

Barbour x Baracuta Brown Wax

The second waxed cotton model in this collection is the Barbour x Baracuta Brown Wax, available in black or olive. This model takes the silhouette of Baracuta's iconic G4 jacket, first launched by the brand in 1944. Its fit is slightly looser than that of the brand's iconic G9 Harrington jacket. The G4, known as the G9's little sister, offers a balance between a casual style and a more formal style. It is featured here in Barbour's signature 8oz waxed cotton, to provide optimal weather resistance. It features a corduroy-lined stand-up collar, two deep flap pockets, wallet pockets for optimal storage as well as Baracuta's signature umbrella back yoke.

The lining merges Barbour's classic tartan and Baracuta's iconic Fraser tartan.

Barbour x Baracuta Clayton Wax

The reimagining of Baracuta's iconic style with Barbour's signature details is highlighted in the Barbour x Baracuta Clayton Wax jacket. This 8oz waxed cotton jacket features 6 pockets on the front and 3 pockets on the back, including an umbrella pocket. It also has a double-press stud corduroy collar extending into a hood for optimal protection against the elements.

Ian Bergin, Director of Menswear Department at Barbour, explains: "It was a great pleasure to work with the Baracuta design team to develop this collaboration. The G9, with its umbrella back and Fraser tartan, is a masculine classic. We used it as the foundation of the collection and merged it with Barbour's iconic DNA in terms of the classic Barbour tartan and our all-weather Oban 8oz waxed cotton. The collaboration between the two brands is about the correct approach to authenticity and relevance, focusing on how iconic heritage brands interpret the past for the modern consumer. "

Baracuta added: "The association came naturally. We deeply respect Barbour's history and heritage, as well as its commitment to craftsmanship and quality. Barbour products are renowned for their durability and style, and some are globally recognized as true icons of British fashion. We enjoyed working with the Barbour team to create pieces that last for decades and pay tribute to the values we cherish, while combining the best of our two brands. We hope that all Baracuta and Barbour fans will love this limited edition as much as we do. It is a unique, distinguished, and modern collection composed of three jackets that perfectly reflect the Ivy Style inspiration."

About Barbour

Founded in 1894 by John Barbour in South Shields, in the northeast of England, to provide outerwear for fishermen, sailors, and mariners to protect them from the worst of British weather, today the Barbour brand offers a complete range of clothing, accessories, and footwear for men, women, and children. Shirts, sweaters, pants, shoes, and accessories are now just as much in demand as Barbour's iconic outerwear.

Forever synonymous with the British countryside, Barbour's collections now extend from outdoor wear to fashion lifestyle collections. Even today, Barbour's ranges continue to draw inspiration from the company's archives, which date back to 1910. Each season, classic designs are reinterpreted in modern and contemporary silhouettes.

A fifth-generation family brand created 129 years ago, Barbour is a global success story sold in over 55 countries, including Germany, Italy, Spain, France, the United States, and Japan. In 2020, Barbour launched Wax for Life, designed to encourage people to extend the lifespan of their jackets. Wax for Life includes rewaxing as well as Re-Loved, an upcycling initiative.

In 2023, Barbour will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Beaufort waxed cotton jacket, an Evergreen icon, designed by Dame Margaret Barbour in 1983 and one of the classic jackets that made Barbour a household name.

About Baracuta

Baracuta is one of the historic British clothing brands. Born in Manchester in 1937, its iconic G9, G4, and G10 models have become timeless classics. The G9 is still one of the most famous icons in the history of menswear. It was created by the Miller brothers in 1937, with the Fraser tartan lining, granted to the Millers by Lord Fraser of the Lovat family, and recognizable by its umbrella cut on the back. The cult of the G9 exploded in the 1950s with its distribution in the United States and the brand's adoption by celebrities such as Elvis Presley, James Dean, Frank Sinatra, and Steve McQueen. In 1964, the Baracuta G9 became universally known as the "Harrington" jacket thanks to the popularity of Ryan O'Neal who wore it in the role of Rodney Harrington in Peyton Place. In recent years, this classic British style icon has also been adopted by several youth subcultures, including mods, punks, skinheads, and various English rockers.
