Arbor: sustainable streetwear from Antwerp

Arbor is a streetwear brand founded in Antwerp in 2019, offering organic cotton collections crafted in ateliers in Portugal. Its philosophy can be summed up in four words: "buy less, but better." The Clothette showroom represents the brand in France, building a selective presence with independent shops that share its values.

What kind of brand is Arbor?

Arbor was born in 2019, from the meeting of Sacha, the initial founder of the brand, and Sondra, who joined him with one simple condition. "I asked if I could join on the condition that we find an accountant, put a website online, and make everything legal," Sondra says. "He did it all. I had to invest part of my savings for the collection, and we launched."

Arbor is Latin for tree. This starting point directed the brand towards organic cotton right from the beginning. "I told Sacha we had to do something related to nature. We started using organic cotton, and that was our key differentiator from the launch. Many brands invest in sustainability today, but we were one of the first." From this conviction, Arbor's motto was born: buy less, but better.

Antwerp as a playground, not a label

A city with an eye for fashion, without making it a marketing argument

Antwerp carries an important fashion heritage, from the Antwerp Six to the generations of designers trained at the Royal Academy. Arbor positions itself elsewhere. "We don't see ourselves as a designer brand like Dries Van Noten or Martin Margiela," Sondra explains. "We are a brand known in Antwerp for streetwear. But Antwerp is first and foremost our hometown."

What influences Arbor is the city's daily life more than this academic heritage. "Walking around here, you see that everyone has an eye for fashion, good looks, style. This can influence designs and new pieces." A diffuse influence, absorbed by the street rather than claimed.

Organic cotton production in Portugal

How Arbor found its ateliers

The brand started with white-label pieces from a Belgian supplier. But Sondra and Sacha were not satisfied with the fit. "An agent who worked with ateliers in Portugal approached us for custom production. We worked with him, and we have continued with the same ateliers ever since. We built a lasting relationship with them and they watched the brand grow."

Today, Arbor visits its ateliers two to three times a year. "We have direct contact with one of the managing partners. We often hear about bonuses and other benefits for employees, even though we obviously cannot control everything 100%."

The true compromise of a small ethical brand

Sondra describes the cost of sustainability bluntly: "The most difficult compromise is choosing growth without compromising our standards. For a small brand, it is often more expensive and slower to do things right. We have to decline opportunities or produce small quantities so as not to compromise manufacturing quality. It's hard, but staying true to these standards is more important to us than growing quickly."

The floral pattern and collabs as brand language

The origin of Arbor's visual identity

Designs are developed by Arbor's creative team. Inspirations blend nature, vintage graphics, street culture and "the contrast between something organic and something raw or urban." No fixed reference, but an accumulation of visual ideas filtered through the brand's identity.

The floral pattern is Arbor's visual signature. "We like the contrast between a soft, organic flower and the raw, sober character of our pieces. Over time, people began to associate this organic/raw opposition with the brand. It is something we reinterpret in different collections and collabs."

Timberland, Clarks, Birkenstock: how Arbor chooses its collabs

Arbor's collabs with Timberland, Clarks and Birkenstock are based on a simple but demanding criterion. "These brands have a strong identity and a real connection to what we do. The goal is never to put our logo on their product, but rather to find a way to merge the two universes while staying within the framework of the Arbor identity."

Three heritage brands, each with its own language, reinterpreted through the Arbor aesthetic: a demonstration that sustainable streetwear is compatible with high-visibility partnerships, provided it remains consistent with its identity.

Who buys Arbor, and how the brand chooses its retailers

An evolving customer profile

"In 2019, we were seen as a women's brand. I was younger and managed social media, which naturally attracted more women. We then experienced a boom in visibility among men, a key factor in our growth." The breakdown has shifted from 70% women to 40% today.

The typical customer profile: "A 21-year-old guy, living in the heart of the city, who wants to dress well but stays casual."

Why Arbor remains selective with its points of sale

Arbor limits the number of retailers in each region. "We want to maintain an exclusive edge, partly to avoid overstock. A boutique is the ideal place because our pieces are more expensive and people want to see, try on, and touch the items before buying."

It is within this logic that the relationship between Arbor and Clothette fits, representing the brand in France through a carefully selected network of retailers.
